Diary
1 January 2020: FINAL DIARY ENTRY Continuity: redraft and post entry to website. Restructure website into sections, so that it is not just a long list of entries. Now 50 entries.
December 2019 Summary: The initial main phase of the lexicon, drafting the first set of major entries is complete. Proofing and correcting needs to be done, new entries will be added over time, previous teaching materials will be added so that this is available to all. Will now move from the sabbatical project work to using the lexicon in teaching. The lexicon is submitted as a poster for the Screenwriting Research Network conference 2020, and will wait for the outcome of this proposal before commencing any other types of circulation, as newness is one of the criteria for the SRN submission: the work has to be new and not repeated from different conferences. There are visitors to the lexicon website site, and as realized at the start of writing, the lexicon will be visited as a reference, the visitor going to two or three entries and the entries will not be read as a single document. This usage led to the early decision that entries needed to be longer so that they could stand alone and be understood on this basis. There is room to develop the lexicon, and its usefulness. Would like to have audio version of the entries as this would make them more accessible. Also, links to visual material, key points. The lexicon is effectively 44 introductory lectures on a range of topics that will support an understanding of story and film narrative. A contribution to practice and to theory.

The lexicon is effectively 44 introductory lectures on a range of topics that will support an understanding of story and film narrative. A contribution to practice and to theory.
30 & 31 December 2019 Work on revising previous material to include as part of the lexicon. To support teaching using the lexicon rather than using different sets of my teaching materials which are held in different places: QMPlus, Academia.edu. This building of the lexicon will continue after the sabbatical period.
29 December 2019 Text file of all entries + Storytelling Articles + Diary. Create single text file for all entries, which will include the diary and an index. This is to produce a single back up file of the work up until 29 December 2019. WORD COUNT: 130,934. Lexicon on Narrative Film, Index and Title Page with copyright and other information. WORD COUNT: Lexicon on Narrative Film, Contents and Title Page with copyright and other information, plus Storytelling Articles: 138,526, Plus Diary: 149,249.
28 December 2019 dialogue: finish draft, post to web page and start correcting and revising online. This will be the final newly drafter entry for the sabbatical period and will now move to preparation for teaching. Integrating the lexicon into planning for lectures and workshops. Adding material to the lexicon from earlier material so that this is available to students as a single source. The word count, based on a running total when entries were first posted to the webpage is 122,976. This is for 44 entries. The plan originally was for more entries, but from the first entry it was necessary to offer explanations of terms and how they applied to film making, so they have a clearer pedagogy. Correct and proof dialogue entry: copy to Google doc. Back Up website to zip folder. Hide diary from public view.
27 December 2019 dialogue: add to entry. Small element. Need to round off and can develop, refine later.
24, 25, 26 December 2019 24: break. 25, dialogue: small amount of work correcting this entry. Two parts still needed: dialogue to show personality/psychology and types of speech. Also review film edit: shorten this. 26, form: correct and add to this entry. Working like this the web entries will be the most up to date and proofed versions. Need to be careful not to loose track of this.
23 December 2019 dialogue: re-start on this entry, re-writing and proofing present draft, which needs extra elements to be a complete entry.
21 & 22 December 2019 editing for Small Group Tour. Get a full cut done for an installation. Will try it out in Film and Drama studio in the New Year and may organize an open screening for first week of semester. Plan to round off entry for dialogue next week and then move to teaching planning. Will update lexicon with previous material. Good to have a break from entries for film practice project.
December 20 2019 QMPlus: updated module information and sent messages to students. Needed to do this as timetable is not in place and the central timetable has incorrect information. Worked on formatting the module areas. Can't get consistency. The set up for each module area differs and there seems to be no way to conform small elements: what shows and what doesn't for news. Will try to attend QMPlus drop in session in January. Will progress dialogue in the next couple of days. This will be last new entry, but plan to add items already written as these are useful and used in my teaching: continuity, directing, SF. Timetabling for Semester 2: this is now set up without clashes and all is good for the running of Production Skills. 19 & 20 editing of stills for small group tour: break from lexicon and might have film for the New Year: short installation piece.
December 19 2019 dialogue: continue drafting.
December 18 2019 dialogue: continue drafting.
December 17 2019 dialogue: continue drafting. Proofing sections already drafted.
December 16 2019 dialogue: drafting entry. Working to make it clear and useful. Set up page for entry. Amend some of the titles for the entry pages: want to keep clear while brief. Second session: continue drafting dialogue.
December 14 & 15 2019 Break from Lexicon drafting. There are now 43 entries totaling 119,000+ words. Need to finish drafting new entries this month.
December 13 2019 editing: post first draft to lexicon web page. Draft to be corrected and proofed. Second session: corrected draft online and copied to Google Docs. Finished the first draft the long entry as planned 6000+ words.
December 12 2019 editing: continue work on this entry, correct section on montage. General Election Day.
December 11 2019 editing: progress on drafting, getting a range of sections done. One more section to go, so should be able to finish draft and post to Lexicon web page by the end of the week. Presently 5000+ words.
December 10 2019 editing: continue work on editing. Will be a long entry. Correct draft, continue to write.
December 9 2019 abstraction: complete first draft and post to lexicon. Start proofing and revising this draft. Revising online version and will copy this to the Google Docs. Revise first draft, corrected on web page, and copied to Google doc. Word count for entries is now 112,843 + 3,961 for adapted entries + articles on storytelling. Will work on editing this week.
December 2 to 8 2019 Semi-break after 5 months writing. During break will do some drafting. During Break: Decided to move glossary entries to Lexicon web page, so there is just one stream of entries. The glossary entries were running long, so were not really key terms in a glossary format, and also they were covering material not in the Lexicon. This simplifying, just having the lexicon should help further writing and then proofing and use of entries. Reformatted website for this revised single entry structure. Corrected and proofed form. Corrected and proofed actuality. Drafted abstraction, will revise and proof and the post to lexicon. Revise and continue with drafting abstraction: not yet finished in first draft form.
November 2019 Summary: Planned to undertake revising and proofing of all long entries written by end of October. Done. Still needs final proofing. Planned to start glossary: done, but entries are longer than intended. They are not going to reduce to less than 250 words per entry because they need to be useful, rather than just flat definitions of terms. Work on long entries: partially completed. Shifting from proofing to writing both glossary and long entries was over ambitious. Can't work on different lengths at the same time. Did work on the web site layout: going back and forth over items. The website format is now set and should not need any further tweaking. Decided against preparing the lexicon in a book/printed format, as this would take time to do and would create an alternative version of the lexicon which would be difficult to keep matched with the website. Word count for all entries now over 110,000. This makes final proofing an issue. Also, attended Brighton's Cine City film festival, and a film at the Irish Film Festival, taking up some time. PLANNING DECEMBER: Will start month with a semi-break, for one week, after 5 months of writing, some drafting and planning. Will use remainder of the month to round off first draft of the lexicon, and then move on to preparation for teaching, which is extensive, as there are 18 lectures/workshops to plan for. Can do some of this is the New Year. Have set up material for three modules on QMPlus so that the major elements for the module are already in place: assessments, outlines, teaching materials. Main item is lesson plans and material for these, fully planned. Timetable clash still in place on Monday's which is an ongoing worry.
1 December 2019 comedy: post first draft to lexicon, long entry.
28, 29, 30 November 2019: Take a break, some work on comedy and on editing, but progressing slowly. Plant to finish comedy early next week and then editing. Need to consider progress after this.
27 November 2019 editing: correct and revised what's written.
26 November 2019 editing: restart on this entry, cut large section of first draft, and begin to work with a clearer and more informative structure. Plan to have draft done by Friday as it will be long. Update webpages, some corrections to text and add image for glossary.
25 November 2019 comedy: and also, editing: work on drafting both, and still need to complete. Plan to focus on one as they are both long entries.
23 & 24 November editing: start work on this entry. comedy: revise earlier teaching article, so that it can go into the lexicon. The is the first time for this. It puts material into the lexicon, so enriching it, and there is little purpose in just producing a new article with the same views, on the same topic. Also, the plan is to centre teaching on the lexicon, rather than the module specific material on QMPlus. The QMPlus will be set up so that there will be links to the lexicon, rather than having separate and isolated QMPlus material.
22 November 2019 narrative: draft glossary entry, proof and post to web page. Go to Irish Film Festival Reception and Screening: Dark Lies the Island.
21 November 2019 acting: draft glossary entry: needs revising and proofing before posting. acting: revise, proof and post entry to lexicon glossary web page. Also, correct and update this entry on line.
20 November 2019 actuality: correct and proof on web page and copy to Google. character: draft glossary entry and post to lexicon web page.
19 November 2019 sound: continue working on this entry. sound: complete first draft entry, and post to lexicon.
18 November 2019 plot: revise online version and then post to the Google version. Some thinking about entry for sound. Post this months statistics, traffic and also from start of project to today. sound: start on this entry. First 1500 words drafted.
17 November 2019 subject matter: revise, proof and post to lexicon. storytelling: begin work on the revising and proofing for this entry. storytelling: revise, proof and post to lexicon. All 36 long entries now had second proofing, but proofing for typos and clarity is needed. Word count now at 103,449. Now need to consider glossary for the lexicon and lectures for semester two, with the lectures incorporating the lexicon material. The proofing is finished ahead of schedule, which is good.
16 November 2019 story: revise, proof and post to lexicon. story world: revise, proof and post to lexicon. 34 entries proofed, and two to go. Word count now stands at 90,060. Change spacing on buttons for all lexicon entries. Hope this finalises the lexicon design.
15 November 2019 plot: revise, proof and post to lexicon. Could do with a further edit. The first section repeats the same idea. realism: revise, proof and post to lexicon. Writing in early morning, 4-6 am. Someone knocks on door and tries to walk into the house. writer's block: revise, proof and post to lexicon.
14 November 2019 narrative film: revise, proof and post to lexicon. narratology: revise, proof and post to lexicon. truth: revise, proof and post to lexicon. medium: revise, proof and post to lexicon. Entry was previously titled narrative medium, but the use of narrative is not needed. Also do some work correcting typos on lexicon entries: polishing. Now corrected 29 entries, 80,216 words and have 8 to go, so 4 days work from completion of proofing for long entries.
13 November 2019 moral duality: revised, proof and post to lexicon. A long entry, 6,552 words, so perhaps the longest. Taking the lexicon word count to 71,133. Issues over choices in spelling between systems, Google and Weebly: can't quite decide on preference. As the entries finish on Weebly may use this dictionary.
12 November 2019 light: continuity revise, proof and post to lexicon. Proofing to finish all long entries is planned to take eight more days, at 5000 words per day. This is stalled when an entry needs significant re-writing. light: realism revise, proof, and post to lexicon. mimesis: revised, proof and post to lexicon. misogyny: revise, proof and post to lexicon. Got a day ahead with proofing, but this can lead to being over-tired for the next day. 24 entries corrected, 64,000 words, and 12 entries remain. Still need someone to proof for typos at least.
11 November 2019 framing: revise, proof and post to lexicon web page. games: revise, proof and post to lexicon web page. Text revised to 51,261 words. 16 entries still to revise. Make contact about timetable issues in semester two.
10 November 2019 form: continue working on this. redraft second half, making changes. Trying to make a coherent argument in a short word count. The point is quite simple, film form is not fixed, but why it appears to be fixed needs to be explained. May have finished draft and it now needs proofing. Will try not to rewrite. form: posted to lexicon web page, revised, final. Revision done to first 40,000 words of entries. Halfway in terms of number of entries. 18 out of 36. framing: start of proof this. Also, admin for teaching, sorting out files, moving and copying files.
9 November 2019 form: work on redrafting. Issues with clarifying argument, that film form is not set and so can be developed. Hard to put into a simple and effective argument in relation to theories of form, the development of film and film theory. Will try not to get bogged down.
8 November 2019 ethics: redraft, revise and post to lexicon. event: redraft, revise and post to lexicon. fabula: redraft, revise and post to lexicon. This take the redrafting, revising and proofing to 15 entries and 30,000+ words, so third of the lexicon by 8 November, so should be able to complete and revised all by end of November as planned. film: (medium, form) redraft, revise and post to lexicon. focalisation: redraft, revise and post to lexicon.
7 November 2019 Character: revise and post draft. So, far, starting at the beginning of the month have corrected ten entries, with over 20,000 words, so should be able to complete proofing and posting by the end of the month as planned as well as drafting new entries. The lexicon is running at 96,000 words to revising is a task. Also, revise and post, diegesis, mimesis. Also revise and post, ellipsis.
6 November 2019 Actuality: first draft completed, and posted to lexicon web page. Proof actuality, and action, glossary entry, and re-post. Proof and re-post audience knowledge.
5 November 2019 Actuality: drafted glossary entry. Likely to post tomorrow. Also, consider sound entry, will, plan to start tomorrow.
4 November 2019 Attention: revised and final draft posted to lexicon web page. Good to get long entry revised. Also, watch Making Waves: The Arts of Cinematic Sound. A successful documentary about sound in film: good for research for this lexicon topic.
3 November 2019 Agent: posted to lexicon web page. Final draft for now. Begin work on revising attention. Draft glossary entry for action (narrative) (form) (production) (blocking). Post action glossary entry to web page, and make glossary visible, so it will be 'published' as completed. Also work on text design for the site. Trying to make the site simple, coherent and appealing. actuality: correct online posting.
2 November 2019 Agent: work to re-write and proofread draft. Should complete tomorrow.
1 November 2019 Action (narration): post draft to lexicon web page. Total for word count to 94, 672. Tweak website: change appearance, add glossary section. For the journal write summary for October, set plan for November. May take a break for next two days: weekend. Action (poetics): post revised/final draft to lexicon web page.
October 2019 Summary: The planning for October was: "Plan to write long entries up to 90,000. This was done, new entries and word count now at 94,089 for 34 long entries. Also planned for October: 20,000 words proofread to take all to second draft. This was done for all the entries written by the start of October, the new entries for the month, will need to have second and final draft. Other work on lexicon: tweaking website, putting up new material, making sure links work, trying to make design work for clarity of use and in terms of appearance, visual design. Want site to work via mobile use. An extra entry for Storytelling in Film, for the film contact. Will do more of these in the New Year once the lexicon work is on line. For teaching: set up QMplus for three modules, with clearer layout for all, editing/removing of past material, locating new material. Improving QMPlus so that it can make use of the Lexicon. Started draft planning for lectures. Issues with timetable clashes unresolved, which is a worry for January. For November: Proofread all long entries and re-post to lexicon webpages. This will be 94,672 words to redraft. This posting will be the final version apart from a proofing by a third party, which will be for typos and grammar. Have list of six long entries to do, will try to do these, but may get preoccupied with re-writing and proofing. Plan to work on glossary: very short entries so that terms in the long entries can be followed. Will create glossary list while proofing. When a term that might need a definition comes out, this will be noted and the term added to the lexicon. Need to create discipline for very short entries. Three sentences maximum, or 100 words. Hard to do. At end of the month may produce printed book of entries and glossary. So this is what is used for the final proofread. After this may add material from previous sources, so that this is used and made available. Need to keep an eye on teaching and lesson planning. Will hope to finalise lexicon apart from tweaking at end of November, so can plan teaching and to utilise lexicon in the New Year: this will be the December work.
31 October 2019 Action (narration): draft second definition for this term, for the glossary, but then it is too long and may move to lexicon. Need to keep glossary terms very short, one or two sentences: statements, not discussions.
30 October 2019 Actant: work on proofing term, so that corrected drafts can be posted to lexicon. May make this the November task. Second session: posted revised draft of actant to lexicon webpage. Also begin to draft glossary term: action.
29 October 2019 Framing: first full draft posted to lexicon web page. Total entries now: 33. With word count of 93,068 words. Need to be sure what to do in November and December, to ensure lexicon is ready, and teaching is ready. Making some notes for lectures. Second Session: add to draft for framing and extend it: post to web page. Word count now at 94, 089.
28 October 2019 Framing: complete rough draft for the entry. Still to re-draft and correct before first posting.
27, 28 October 2019 Film: draft entry and post to lexicon web page. Requires redrafting, proofing and correcting. Some overlap in terms between narrative film and film, but felt that the entry for Film was meaningful and useful.
26 October 2019 Storytelling in Film: write discussing the need for theme connected to character using the film Countdown (2019) indicating that a plot device cannot dominate a film, but needs to develop and dramatise the characters failings, fears and crisis. This article is written directly to web page, like a blog: no separate file.
25 October 2019 Character: add new section to first draft and post to lexicon web page.
23 & 24 October 2019 Character: complete first full draft and post to lexicon web page. Entry to be redrafted, proof read and corrected. Also, set up PC laptop for teaching, to use in lectures, and to work on lexicon. Also, list cinema films seen since 2016, a teaching aid to discuss perceptions of narrative film at this time.
22 October 2019 Character: continue work on entry. Will plan to finish draft, proof and post tomorrow.
19, 20, 21 October 2019 Character: begin drafting entry. Also work on setting up teaching, gathering film clips, sorting files. Prepare notes and material for student undertaking first sit. Some reading on actors.
18 October 2019 Story world: first draft completed and posted to lexicon web page. Requires redraft and proofing.
17 October 2019 Story world: complete draft entry, apart from proofreading and corrections. Plan to complete this tomorrow and post.
13, 14, 15, 16 October 2019 Storytelling: A little work on this, but then move to teaching planning for semester 2. Clear all module areas on QMPlus, so not cluttered, the prepare module outlines and teaching programmes for: FLM403 Production Skills, FLM205 Scriptwriting: Adaptations and Original Script.and FLM6209 Crimewriting: Feature Film Development. Then go through previous teaching material, building Production Skills from the start, as not taught it for a decade or so, then worked on the other two modules. Previously used a week by week structure, and now moved to topics, with all shown at the start. Each area is now set up enough to leave until December/January: there is enough on each to teach the module, so can rest here, and also it gives me a sense of how I can use the Lexicon in my teaching: not just as an add on outside of the modules. Other matters: emails back and forth about a single first sit, confirmation of proposal for poster at the SRN conference next year. Advising a student about work experience, accepting LinkedIn connections from alumni. A somewhat disrupted few days: not what was planned, but moving forward. Leave the module planning until the last minute would not be a good idea, and now the students have access. Finally, made contact with colleague over teaching next year on Production Skills. Too much admin.
11 & 12 October 2019: Break.
10 September 2019 Misogyny: first draft completed and posted to lexicon. Lexicon now stands and 80,801 words for 29 entries. Restart on framing: composition lexicon term and also re-order lexicon index page to make the entries and there purpose more coherent.
9 September 2019 Misogyny: Complete draft, will proofread final section and then post to lexicon. As a political term this entry is more wide ranging than those related to narrative theory, both have discursive aspects, but misogyny is with the field of cultural narratology rather than structural narratology. Also. re-order index list, first page of lexicon website
7 & 8 October 2019: Sent off proposal for a poster for the lexicon at the Screenwriting Research Network Conference in September 2020. Made indicative poster design and completed information for project. Little progress on misogyny entry on 7, but move forward on 8 to reach start of final third. Also, edited material on QM+ for semester 2 teaching,. Made modules available to students, with a simple message for each about timetable, but have a good idea how to proceed to set up. Production Skills required the most effort as the previous years material was not mine and I had to edit and then set up for a new format. External Examiner report for BA courses came in: all good for the programme: main action to get the examining sample correct next year.
5 & 6 October 2019: News of brother's death on Saturday morning. He died yesterday, Friday and cremation Saturday, in Spain. Got email just before plan to start work on lexicon. May now take a break until Monday 7.
3 & 4 October 2019: Continue work on Misogyny: getting bogged down with a long entry. Need to work through this or start on another entry. Looked at the Production Skills module set up on QMPlus and also at planning for teaching. Call for papers for Screenwriter's Network Conference 2020: Boundaries is the topic. Plan to submit proposal for paper or panel.
September 2019 Summary: 3 months into sabbatical. Halfway in terms of time available. Lexicon stands at 75,000. October: Plan to write long entries up to 90,000 and take all entries to 2nd draft. October: To Do: Long entries, 15,000 words first draft and 20,000 words proofread to take all to second draft. November: Short entries, up to 30,000 word and start teaching prep, lectures for Production Skills and Crime writing. QMPlus for all modules. December: Lexicon to website, to book form. Also, other articles to lexicon web pages and finalise teaching preparation. Need to have rooms and timetable in place: at present clash over teaching.
2 October 2019: London: Exam board. Meeting re: teaching planning, + meeting with colleagues.
1 October 2019 Misogyny: Restart on draft entry, after initial start some time ago. Response from MA examiner: all good for board.
30 September 2019 Realism: correct first draft and re-post to lexicon. Some preparation for meetings and MA exam board on 2nd October. Timetable issue for Production Skills: try to resolve issue.
29 September 2019 Realism: Restart entry. First drafted and posted to lexicon webpage.
28 September 2019 Break. Pause on entry for Realism. Plan to reset entry for realism.
27 September 2019 Realism: Begin drafting entry.
25 & 26 September 2019 Plot: complete first draft and post to lexicon web page on 26 September. Long entry. Took time to draft, but also occupied with ensure examining material was prepared for the MA Final Project, which is now done.
24 September 2019 Plot: First part of the day taken up with putting MA film material onto Vimeo and then resending. This seems resolved by evening. Continue work on Plot, now 3,000 words plus. Wanted to keep definitions short, but explaining the term has different aspects and so creates more than just a static definition.
23 September 2019: Plot: Begin drafting entry, plan to finish tomorrow. Decided on plan for lexicon and teaching planning. October: Lexicon - Long entries: to be end at 90,000 words. November: short entries: to offer brief definition and advice. By end of November have all entries up after proofreading. December set up teaching: module outlines, make contact and then fill out. End of the day and into the 24 September, am. caught up with sending MA Final Project material through links, with need to upload and re-order.
21 & 22 September 2019: Break.
20 September 2019: Subject Matter: Completed proofreading of all the entries drafted for the Lexicon, totalling 69,084 words. These are now in second draft form and still need a further proofing and correction before posting to lexicon web page.
19 September 2019: Narrative Medium, Story, Storytelling: Proofread and corrected lexicon entries. Reading for final proofreading and correction before posting to lexicon web page. Begin to proofread Subject Matter, which is the last entry that needs to be proofread to have all entries at the second draft stage.
17 September 2019 Light: Realism and Narrative, Mimesis, Narrative Film, Narratology, Truth. Finish proofreading five terms. Rewriting and proofreading to second draft now totals over 50,000 words. (53,518) Will continue with this until all terms are proofread, 4 to go, and then consider next stage: smaller, thumbnail terms, and revising existing documents. Also, need to consider ending the project and preparing teaching.
17 September 2019 Light: finish proofreading Light: Continuity for Narration and start proofing Light: Realism and Narrative.
16 September 2019 Games: Proofread and corrected. This second draft to be further proofread before posting to lexicon. Send of MA Final Project material to external examiner, SLLF assessment, and supervisors.
15 September 2019 Form: Proofread to produce second draft, to be proofread again, and then posted to lexicon. Finalising sample and material for external examiner for MA in Documentary Practice.
14 September 2019 Focalisation: proofread to produce 2nd draft, which will then be proofread and corrected before posting to Lexicon web page. This takes the total word count for entries at second draft stage to 32,420, which is over 50%. Giving that the date to complete this work was 14th, this indicates that all entries should be at first draft stage by end of the the month, and the redrafting can be undertaken at a rate of 2000 words per day. The admin on the MA Final Project module should be finishing this weekend and what remains is the exam board in October.
12, 13 September 2019 Ellipsis, Ethics, Events, Fabula: 12 & 13 re-writing and proofing first drafts. Four entries now ready for second proofread before posting to Lexicon. 13: Taken up with Admin for MA Final Project. Last marking in, marks agreed, recorded, then feedback and marking posted to supervisors and admin, to each student, and begin process of preparing cover sheet and sample for external.
11 September, 2019 Diegesis: redrafted and corrected, needs to be proofread then posted to lexicon. Also, Ellipsis: redrafted and corrected, needs to be proofread then posted to lexicon. Writer's Block: redrafted and corrected, needs to be proofread then posted to lexicon.
10 September 2019 Audience - Reader: redrafted and corrected, needs to be proofread then posted to lexicon.
9 September 2019 Attention: redrafted and corrected, ready to be proofread and then posted to lexicon.
5-8 September 2019 Minor admin issues for MA: gathering copies of films, entering marks, collating mark sheets. Considering next stage of Lexicon development: new entries, revised first draft entries, add entries from existing material after re-drafting, put in short entries: thumbnail definitions. 7 & 8 September effectively a break.
4 September 2019 Narrative Medium: first full draft posted to lexicon web page. narrative medium (narrative theory) While a medium has no inherent narrativity, as it is used to develop into a narrative form the medium has a specificity, it enables and carries story in different ways: an audio narrative will convey story without images, a literary novel does not produce sound and relies on the printed word to convey story.
